Do Your Teeth Need Root Canals?

If the tooth enamel is damaged, bacteria can enter the inner portion of the tooth known as the canal. At the bottom of the canal lies the root, which holds the tooth’s pulp. If bacteria infect the pulp, the tooth cannot expect to survive unless root canal therapy is used.

Root canals save teeth with damaged pulps by removing the pulp. Because the pulp is the life source of a tooth, if it is damaged, the connective tissues, nerve endings, and blood vessels connected to it all suffer. However, if a damaged pulp is left untreated, it can become infected and destroy more than just the tooth it’s responsible for.

To seal a tooth with a root canal, the area must be cleaned and cared for to ensure that bacteria is not present. In many cases, lasers are used to assist with this delicate task. After the tooth has been cleaned, it is sealed to ensure the tooth can continue to function for many years to come. Without root canals, these teeth would need to be immediately extracted.
