Sleep apnea is normally thought of as merely a sleep interruption. But did you know it could also put you at risk for serious health problems, including high blood pressure, stroke, and heart failure? Sleep apnea is a common yet serious sleep disorder which involves failed breathing while you sleep.

Environmental factors can contribute to sleep apnea, as can genetic predisposition and other factors. Even the weather can contribute, especially if you are suffering from nasal allergies or sinus congestion.

Oftentimes, genetics may be the cause of sleep apnea. Oversized tonsils or tongue, a deviated septum, or an undersized jaw can all contribute to risk for sleep apnea. People over the age of 40 are more at risk, and males tend to get sleep apnea more than females.

If you do have Obstructive Sleep Apnea, or OSA, there are many treatment options available to you. These options may include such things as Continuous Positive Air Pressure (CPAP) therapy treatments, oral appliance therapy, or surgery. The sleep doctor will discuss options with you.
